Homegrowers Market

EXCHANGE -TRADE - SELL or BUY Homegrown fruit and vegetables

Hi,

This is my first ever blog so not quite sure how this works but I need to tell someone. My chooks laid our first egg!!!! You need to know the background to know why I am so eggcited.

We have had our chooks for 4 months now and nothing. I know it has been cold but we were told that the young ones once of age would start laying even if it was cold. Well that didn't happen. We have 5 chooks and we tried changing their food, updating the accommodation (which is now not ony fort knox but a palace to boot) and finaly putting fake eggs in the nest box. Well that seemed to do the trick as a week later we got our first egg, on Thursday and on Sunday they laid two, so I hope the way they are going they we will have 5 in the box by the end of the week.

Florence. 6 months wow!! It is good to know that they eventually started laying. We are still having trouble with the others so have brought in the nettle tea which is not only a natural wormer but is suppose to spur on egg production.

We bought 3 of them when they were 14 weeks (one has died) and bought another 3 from the auctions so am unsure of the age but are atleast 1-2 years old. We have two Red one Sussex one Bantum Sussex and one Spotted Sussex (very big and beautiful). We believe the older Red is the one laying.

That's exiting! We will be getting chooks in October so looking forward to our first egg too. I'll bear in mind all the tricks you had to use to get them though.

That's great!! It's always eggciting to find eggs, and the first one especially ~ We've got 4 chooks and are now about 9 months old, but they didn't start laying until well over 6 months old! We've started placing fake eggs in the nest since they were 18 weeks old, which is when the early maturing chooks supposed to starting laying ^^"

Did you raise your chooks from chicks? Did you get purebreds?
