Hi,
This is my first ever blog so not quite sure how this works but I need to tell someone. My chooks laid our first egg!!!! You need to know the background to know why I am so eggcited.
We have had our chooks for 4 months now and nothing. I know it has been cold but we were told that the young ones once of age would start laying even if it was cold. Well that didn't happen. We have 5 chooks and we tried changing their food, updating the accommodation (which is now not ony fort knox but a pala…

Well as you can tell from the Post Title I have just found this site and having a bit of fun poking around.
A good way to start this Blog would probably be to tell you all a bit about myself. I am relatively new to this home growing veg thing. For the past few years I have lived in the city and grown a few bits and pieces in Pots on my very small balcony. When I had the pots on my balcony I had alot of very poor results, but it was a good learning experience as it inspired me to find out what I…

Hey! This is my first post on Homegrowers and I'm really interested to hear your motivations as to why you're growing your own food. Is it because you just love it (a great reason in itself!), or is more because of health, environment, economic concerns, etc? I'm writing a paper for university at the moment which explores the development of the local food movement and the motivations generating this are a central part I'd love to learn more about. (I'm a keen gardener myself for a whole mixture…

As many of you know I have had major issues with our sons puppy digging up our veggie patch after many vain attempts to keep him out we have finally come up with a puppy proof fence.. My hubby and i concreted some posts in the ground at 2 mt intervals then put up welded wire and then concreted the lower section into the ground so there is no going under around over or through it now and 2 weeks later is still going strong with no holes even though i can see a few spots he has tried to eat but wi…

Well, after a few summer/ humidity teething problems things are starting to grow again and hopefully it won't be long until we get some good meals from the garden. In saying that silverbeet has been a huge winner for us, we can have at least two good meals a week from our plants and have been for ages. Ashley's rogue cherry tomato is still alive well after my purebreds have failed and we have a good amount of baby lettuce again.
My herb garden is truly a permaculture design with everything comp…

It's Hot! Unfortunately it's just going to get hotter so I have started putting shadecloth over the vegies that will need it, for instance I still have broccoli growing. I don't know whether it will form a head or whether it will go to seed but its still going.
I have harvested my 1st lot of carrots and they were so delicious! The second lot will be ready in a week or two and the third lot is in the ground and just starting to sprout.
I find that my basil plants are growing really well, but my…

Did a little more on the garden edging today with a bit of male help to speed up the process. I have a few carrots that have just come up and my zucchini is starting to produce with at least one definitely on the way. Looking forward to doing a bit more planting once the garden is raised and ready to go. Now I just need to find out when to pick zucchinis!

This week during my lunch break with 10 mins to kill went into my local Kmart store which is undergoing renovations. I happily walked up to the gardening section ( knowing they mark heaps of stuff down rather than have to move it) only to see some water tanks pushed to the side.. I asked how much they were ( knowing i had paid $199 earlier in the year for the exact same tanks) and found they are now only $149 so I called for a strong young lad to cart 2 to the layby counter and quickly put them…

Well, I've been pretty much absent from my garden for quite some time. Working full time certainly doesn't help things! After a good few hours of weeding I think I may have started to get somewhere. I've planted some new carrot seeds and parsnip seeds so hopefully they will be growing soon. My zucchini is growing very well and with any luck I'll be getting some zucchinis soon. The cucumber is looking quite sorry for itself, it does have a small cucumber on it but most of the leaves have died off…

I have been having a shocking time with tomatoes recently - not only did I have most of my fruit split (attracting some sort of fungus), then most of them have been 'stung' or something similar. One had a black & yellow caterpillar that I must get around to identifying... Some sort of random cherry tomato from my compost sprouted in the grass near a garden so hubby put bricks around it without weeding it, and staked it up. The interloper has done beautifully and has NO problems while my heir…

When I first moved into my home it was mismatched conifers and overgrown weeds in amongst rose bushes.. the previous owner had planted a few new bushes that had not established well so i had to move them.. Since then i pulled all the conifers and roses out..removed all the weeds and started from scratch to make my dream garden.. I have a picture of myself in about 15 years sitting under a fruit tree on a garden bench and reaching up and eating fruit straight off the tree on a hot summers night..…

I first decided in June to start growing my own fruit and vegetables in earnest it has been a huge five months but I am starting to feel that I know enough to realise that I will never know it all! But I do feel a lot more comfortable just knowing how many resources are out there to help me on what has become a fantastic journey.
Initially I thought that sharing a percentage of my crops with the pests was all part of the 'organic' way of doing things. Now I am learning that there are many thing…

Ate our first tomato of the season yesterday - it was a Green Zebra, yum. Won't be long before we are swimming in tomatoes, there are so many on the vines. Have had a bit of problems with some little black spots but keep pulling those leaves off. Just notices some white mould on one of the plants so have pulled off what I could see - hopefully it doesn't spread. Only three seedlings survived so I have planted these ready for when this crop is harvested. Also ordered some seeds from diggers that…

This month has been very busy at our house. The whole family has been out getting mucky digging up the weeds and adding organic matter to our rich clay soils. My goodness, I love my horses! They finally are putting themselves to use (other then being ridden lol).
I have several types of seeds coming up in clear containers filled with water crystals. These are all sitting on my bedroom windo because it gets full sun from about 10 - 6 at the moment. My almost 4 yr old and I enjoy watching them put…

Well, I'm starting to get a little proud of things! I've got about 10 snow pea plants growing happily in a mostly shady area, along with an abundance of carrots. Unfortunately the sunflowers have been eaten by some local wildlife (either mice or possums) - but this has led to me getting some bird netting to protect the garden.
Also unfortunately, my chooks love digging in the other garden which has uprooted all of the spring onions which were growing nicely. At least i planted them as a "if the…

Over the past few years my vegi garden has suffered badly from the heat and my pathetic attempts at erecting tempory shade cloth to shield it from the sun have ended up blowing over in the wind. My wife, not a keen gardener and does not want unsightly structures in 'her garden', is against me erecting anything permanant. It has not helped with stage four water restrictions as I can not keep up with the water reqirements of my plants.
I have mulshed heavely and dig in heaps of compost and I belie…
