Coping with long hot summers

Over the past few years my vegi garden has suffered badly from the heat and my pathetic attempts at erecting tempory shade cloth to shield it from the sun have ended up blowing over in the wind. My wife, not a keen gardener and does not want unsightly structures in 'her garden', is against me erecting anything permanant. It has not helped with stage four water restrictions as I can not keep up with the water reqirements of my plants.
I have mulshed heavely and dig in heaps of compost and I belie… Continue

Hi Tony - sorry it's taken so long, but I've posted some photos of the new raised bed I've just done. This one is half as wide as the others and it suits better. I've got a few types of potatos in and they're growing great guns.
I've harvested my garlic (well some of it) and have been quite impatient to try it - they are hard to peel when wet aren't they? Now they have dried the oil that they put out when pressing is incredible! regards, Hector..

Hi Tony, yes they are our Peaches. We inherited them when we bought the place. The trees would be at least four years old. They were tiny when we moved here and we only got a few peaches the first year. The next two years we have had lots. I lightly prune the trees in Winter and spray with a mixture to control leaf curl about now(before flowering). They are very easy care in our area. I also have problems in the Vegetable garden with the heat. I am growing a hedge all around to stop the drying winds and use temporary shade sails and lots of mulch. I have planted fruit trees in the vegetable garden area to give shade to the garden as well.

Hi Tony, thanks - but you're right I designed them after seeing a recurring theme in 'low impact gardening'! (an oxymoron if ever there was one). I build another bed and recorded the stages and intend on putting together a blow by blow account. I will work on this, this week and post it. I note you're growing garlic - have you had previous success with this? I'm in the first season of doing so and can't wait to get my hands on them. Any hints? When can you harvest? Should you leave them to dry before use? I look forward to exchanging ideas. Regards, Hector

Growing currently in my patch: Broccoli, Sugar Snap Peas, Snow Peas, Silverbeet, Lettuce, Rocket, Parsley, Rhubarb and Garlic. I had so much success with garlic last year I have tripled the amount I have planted this season. Although it has been very frosty these past 2 weeks my triple grafted plum's buds are swelling nicely even though it hasn't lost all its leaves yet.
