Hi Sue, Hope your garden is surviving the puppy attacks ok. It's probably not a bad idea to rest the vegie patch over summer with the lack of water and everything else that takes up summer priorities. My vegies can tend to get very neglected over the summer holidays, I always plant way too much and then can't really look after everything properly! Sugar cane mulch is my saviour over the dry times, although someone was telling me that lucerne mulch , also at Bunnings, is even better, I might give that a go this year as well. We are in the middle of adding a room onto our house, so i have had to remove one of my vegie areas that was in the way, it was quite sad! I did save most of the soil that I've been working on for years and topped up all my other beds with it, so all was not lost!
I notice that you are looking for seeds in your exchange part; I have heaps of seeds spare if you want some I can send some in the mail, anything in particular that you are looking for? Your vegie patches look good in your photos, hope everything keeps going over summer. Cheers Julie

Hi Sue, thanks for the tips! Luckily I love zucchini - I cook a fair few stir fries and will put them in any meal I cook, not to mention I have a yummy zucchini and walnut loaf/muffin recipe so I'll be set. Wasn't expecting huge crops after my cucumber but thanks for the heads up. My tomatoes have almost finished thank goodness, considering I don't really like them that much. All this recent rainfall will have plenty more I suspect. The pumpkin tips a good one too - I had read somewhere about putting wax on the tops to stop the mould/bugs getting in but your idea sounds like much less effort. Hopefully the rain will have stopped for tomorrow morning so I can get out and finish some edging off.

Hello sue,
How are you? I have been buisy in the vegie patch lots of toms this year as I ran out of tom paste and had to buy some this month from Aldi. just did't taste the same.. Have been planting like mad this month and really love the garden with all the flowers and new greens of the leaves. Had a great pumpkin soup last weekend only have one more left so will make the most of it. Had some broad beans for dinner and lots of greens yumm. Looking forward to some raspberries. I planted a marion berry last year and it's already full of flowers and fruit can't wait for a taste of the fruit. Hope your well let me know what your up to.

hello sue
I'm also 44 and have 3 children although mine are 13G 10G and an 8B. I'm live in upper beaconsfield and love to make jams and preserves also. I love marmalade and raspberry jam also apricots in Brandy. Perhaps we can swap our best recipes. I have some tomatoe seeds if you would like some, they are a beefsteak variety originally from diggers which I have grown for a couple of years and love. I also have seven year climbing bean seeds if you would like I can't remember where I got these from I have grown them for so long. They are a perennial climber and produce lovely pods they need to be picked young for best no string though. They produce for seven years approx then you will need to replant. Anyway love to chat

Puppy Proofed the fence finally...

As many of you know I have had major issues with our sons puppy digging up our veggie patch after many vain attempts to keep him out we have finally come up with a puppy proof fence.. My hubby and i concreted some posts in the ground at 2 mt intervals then put up welded wire and then concreted the lower section into the ground so there is no going under around over or through it now and 2 weeks later is still going strong with no holes even though i can see a few spots he has tried to eat but wi… Continue

Water Tanks

This week during my lunch break with 10 mins to kill went into my local Kmart store which is undergoing renovations. I happily walked up to the gardening section ( knowing they mark heaps of stuff down rather than have to move it) only to see some water tanks pushed to the side.. I asked how much they were ( knowing i had paid $199 earlier in the year for the exact same tanks) and found they are now only $149 so I called for a strong young lad to cart 2 to the layby counter and quickly put them… Continue

Starting From Scratch

When I first moved into my home it was mismatched conifers and overgrown weeds in amongst rose bushes.. the previous owner had planted a few new bushes that had not established well so i had to move them.. Since then i pulled all the conifers and roses out..removed all the weeds and started from scratch to make my dream garden.. I have a picture of myself in about 15 years sitting under a fruit tree on a garden bench and reaching up and eating fruit straight off the tree on a hot summers night..… Continue
