Donna's Garden - 07/12/2008

Well, after a few summer/ humidity teething problems things are starting to grow again and hopefully it won't be long until we get some good meals from the garden. In saying that silverbeet has been a huge winner for us, we can have at least two good meals a week from our plants and have been for ages. Ashley's rogue cherry tomato is still alive well after my purebreds have failed and we have a good amount of baby lettuce again.

My herb garden is truly a permaculture design with everything comp… Continue

Donna's Garden - 03/11/08

I have been having a shocking time with tomatoes recently - not only did I have most of my fruit split (attracting some sort of fungus), then most of them have been 'stung' or something similar. One had a black & yellow caterpillar that I must get around to identifying... Some sort of random cherry tomato from my compost sprouted in the grass near a garden so hubby put bricks around it without weeding it, and staked it up. The interloper has done beautifully and has NO problems while my heir… Continue

Donna's Garden 14/10/08

I first decided in June to start growing my own fruit and vegetables in earnest it has been a huge five months but I am starting to feel that I know enough to realise that I will never know it all! But I do feel a lot more comfortable just knowing how many resources are out there to help me on what has become a fantastic journey.

Initially I thought that sharing a percentage of my crops with the pests was all part of the 'organic' way of doing things. Now I am learning that there are many thing… Continue

Hi Donna, i see you're getting the seedsasvers group happening, i'm really excited. I work at a school garden a few hours a week (Marshall Rd State School, Holland Park West) and was talking with the deputy the other day about the possibility of having a seedsaving garden at the school. Would this work in well with the work you're doing? We could put notices in the school newsletter and involve any interested families too.

I'd like to have a chat with you before i take it to a staff meeting. My number is 0413 237 808.

Cheers Donna
Awesome work!

Hi Donna,

Just letting you know I started a group for Southside Brisbanites. Just thought it might help narrow things down a bit for exchanges. Feel free to join if you want to. Happy gardening! PS The seed saver idea is great - thanks for all the effort put into the newsletters too.

Definitely do attend the BOGI fair. They are really a great bunch of people. Also, they have started doing some less frequent meetings on the weekend for people who cannot make it at night (more of a family affair). You should be able to obtain more information about this at the fair. I am fairly fortunate in that my wife looks after our little girl when I go to the monthly night meetings.

Hi Donna
Thanks for your advice re the shady garden. I know what you mean our sun is pretty strong. I guess i'll just plant it up and see what goes best - getting warmer almost everyday although a bit of a chilly wind today. Happy Gardening, Trinette :-)

In that case, I am happy to join the network to learn together. I only started growing things last spring, and I've saved some seeds from last year's icicle radish, butternut pumpkin and sunflowers.. I will try to grow them and see if they come up the same as last year. I have all those pests you mentioned in my garden too... I've tried milk spray, and chili & garlic spray but pretty much only do it on occasional weekend, so they don't seem to work very well... :(

Hi Donna, that's alright, thanks for getting back to me. I am interested in the seed savers network Brisbane, but I wouldn't have anything to contribute, that's why I didn't reply to the post about the BNE SSN. Didn't want to end up being a leecher :p I am only new to growing food and have not had enough harvests to make many meals yet, let alone saving good and healthy seeds. However, I am aiming to be able to save seeds eventually and hope to be part of this seed saving network then.

Hi Donna, nice vegetable beds there. I wish I have space to set up a few when I get my own place. By the way, do you have any of your seed savers handbook left? If so, I am interested in a copy :)

Hey Donna, sounds like you guys are doing well. How do you know when beetroot is ready?? I love how all the seed packets tell you when to sow and how to look after the plants but not what they look like when they're ready. My pumpkins produced lots of fruit to begin with but now even though they're flowering and starting fruit all of it dies once it get a bit bigger than golf ball size - any ideas??

Hi Donna
how is your apple tree doing? Does it set fruit? I know how cold it gets in the Logan area. I was thinking of putting in a tropical apple up here in Mareeba. It gets pretty cold overnight but the days are ususally around 24 degrees. I put in a tropical peach in my house at Wynnum and drops a lot of fruit before they mature. Still working on that one.
