Hey Joanne - Celery grows best when it's not too hot, aut/win/spring in Perth. It likes lots of food and water, chicken manure pellets and compost are great, along with fortnightly feeds of seasol and fish emulsion. Blanching celery will make the stalks paler and more tender. However i don't bother; the resulting stalks are stronger in flavour and a little tougher but i only use them in cooking so that's fine. If you do want to try blanching bunch the stems up with some cardboard tied around (to stop dirt getting in) and hill soil (or straw) up around the plant to exclude light. This is easier if the celery was planted in a trench. OR you could put some kind of container around the plant, like a bucket (or whatever) with the bottom cut out. Good luck!

Hello,I have just joined and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on growing celery? I believe it needs to be blanched (shaded from sun??) to stop it from growing woody but don't really know how to do this. If anyone could help this would be much appreciated. Also, I have surplus chemical free rocket if anyone would like to exchange for other chemical free produce. It was grown using certified organic planting mix. We live south of the river in Perth. Thanks and regards Jo
